Part I
Gregor Samsa wakes to find himself transformed into a giant insect. Struggling with his new body, he misses his train to work. The chief clerk arrives to investigate his absence. Gregor unlocks his door with his mouth, revealing his monstrous form. His horrified family drives him back into his room.
Part II
Gregor adapts to his insect body while his sister Grete brings him food. The family discusses finances—saved money exists but won't last. Grete and their mother try to remove furniture from his room; Gregor clings to a picture on the wall to protect it. His mother faints at the sight of him. His father pelts him with apples, one lodging in his back and wounding him severely.
Part III
Gregor's condition worsens as the apple rots in his back. The family takes in three lodgers for income. Gregor's room becomes a storage dump. One evening, drawn by Grete's violin playing, he creeps into the living room. The lodgers see him and declare they will leave. Grete insists they must get rid of Gregor. He retreats to his room and dies during the night. The charwoman finds his body; the family takes a tram to the countryside, discussing their future as Grete has blossomed into a young woman.
